How To Make A Perfect Affogato Every Time
Perfect for a hot summer day, affogato is usually served after lunch or dinner in Italy. A combination of two Italian classics – espresso and vanilla gelato -, this recipe is categorized as a dessert in the country but as a beverage abroad. Usually served in a tall narrowing glass, the dessert beverage combo can be eaten or drunk with a spoon or a straw.
Even though the recipe only requires two ingredients, we recommend experimenting with different toppings. A few options are caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, cocoa powder, or even sea salt. Now, if you want to impress your guests, topping your dessert with shaved dark chocolate and chopped hazelnuts will elevate its taste and make it look even classier.

It is even possible to prepare your affogato ahead of time if you want to serve it to many guests at an event. All you have to do is scoop the ice cream into glasses and add the toppings, then cover with cling wrap and freeze. When you want to serve them, remove from the freezer and pour espresso over the ice cream. Just make sure to pour it over the dessert – not the glass-, so the hot coffee doesn’t make the cold glass break.
