How Important are Those 10,000 Steps a Day?
Since the tracking of health apps, apple watches, and fitness tracking, there has been a craze over walking at least 10,000 a day. Many studies stress the importance of daily movement and walking, while not emphasizing so much on the literal 10,000 steps. Not everyone may have the time in their day or the physical health to walk the equivalent of about five miles a day. So, how important is it to actually hit those 10,000 steps?
The truth is, even just 10 minutes of walking a day can improve your physical and mental health. It can improve your health by decreasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, bone issues, and some cancers. Walking also boosts your energy, reduces stress and anxiety, and improves sleep routines. Walking is one of the most suggested exercises because it is free, and also allows for multitasking. You can listen to your favorite podcast or a new album, make a social activity by walking with friends, and is accessible for people of all ages and many health conditions.
Your daily dose of exercise does not need to be long and intense. The more you walk, the easier it will be to extend further and faster. Try planning your routine ahead of time so it does not feel so forced. You can get up earlier to get a nice burst of fresh air and energy in the morning. Or maybe you want to walk in the evening to decompress after a long day.
If you can hit 10,000 steps a day, kudos to you. It is important to set goals and encourage healthy habits in your daily routine. However, don’t feel guilty if you can not hit that 10,000 mark. As long as you are able to get a few minutes of movement a day, you are doing the best for your body and mind!
