Excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Kura River, Vardzia is a beautiful cave monastery site in southern Georgia. Built in the 12th century, the caves stretch along the cliff for over five hundred yards and up to nineteen tiers. Largely abandoned after the Ottoman takeover in the sixteenth century, the monastery was an important cultural center, and the area has now been submitted for future inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
