It’s nearly impossible to believe that this lifesize doll isn’t a real human being, which makes sense why it was highly sought after by Robert Ripley of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” fame. A young Robert Ripley first saw Hananuma Masakichi’s sculpture at the San Francisco Art Saloon. The artist was terminally ill at the time of the sculpture’s creation and decided to use his real teeth, toenails, and fingernails to complete his work. Ripley wasn’t able to purchase it until after his collection of oddities gained him extreme notoriety and spent two decades searching for the sculpture that had long been sold by the saloon.
